Eligibility for PgMP Certification

To be eligible to pursue the PgMP certification, you should possess both education and experience. PMI requires both years of program management experience as well as hours directing programs in order to certify an applicant as PgMP.

Application: Complete an online application on the PMI website outlining your program management experience and education, along with any applicable certifications or degree programs. Once submitted, PMI will review it and notify you if your eligibility has been established.

Exam: Once your application is approved, the Program Management Professional (PgMP) exam can be scheduled and taken. The test measures your knowledge of program management principles, practices, and domains.

Domain Expertise: The PgMP exam covers five domains: Strategic Program Management, Program Life Cycle, Benefits Management, Stakeholder Management, and Governance. Each of these has specific tasks and knowledge areas you must ace to pass this examination.

Maintaining Certification Requirements: Once you pass the PgMP exam, to maintain it, you must earn professional development units (PDUs) every three years and retake the exam every three years.

PgMP Certification Eligibility Criteria

The PgMP (Program Management Professional) certification eligibility criteria are tailored to ensure that only experienced program managers qualify. The criteria are segmented based on educational qualifications:

For Graduates:

Experience Requirement: 4500 hours (equivalent to three years or 36 months) of unique, non-overlapping program management experience within the last eight years leading up to the application.

Definition of Non-Overlapping: If a PgMP aspirant manages multiple programs simultaneously during a specified period, only the experience from one of those programs will be taken into account.

Application Documentation: Applicants must detail their work experience of at least 36 months across the standard Program Management Life Cycle phases: Initiation | Planning | Execution | Monitoring and Control | Close Out.

Educational Hours: 35 contact hours of formal Program Management education. This can be achieved through a typical four-day classroom session or a 40-hour e-learning program. 

For Diploma Holders:

Experience Requirement: 7500 hours (equivalent to five years or 60 months) of unique, non-overlapping program management experience within the last eight years leading up to the application.

Definition of Non-Overlapping: Similarly, if a PgMP aspirant is handling multiple programs at once during a specific duration, the experience from only one of those programs will be considered.

Application Documentation: During the PgMP application process, the participant is required to detail a minimum of 60 months of work experience across the typical Program Management Life Cycle phases: Initiation | Planning | Execution | Monitoring and Control | Close Out.

Educational Hours: 35 contact hours of formal Program Management education. This can typically be completed through a four-day classroom session or a 40-hour e-learning program.
